Is this too thick a countertop? You can barely see the window frame at the bottom. Would be nice with a thick one but I don't want it to look completely wrong.
Is that your window? or an example? The window in the picture seems to be fixed, not openable?
In any case, it doesn't look quite right with such a thick countertop there as you say... Covers too much of the window frame, I think.

If you want it to look thick but not cover much of the frame, you can take a thinner piece and glue a thicker "nose" on it. Diagram illustrating door frame with thin board and thick edge, showing a construction technique to make the frame appear thicker without full coverage.

Thanks
Then I'm not off track

That's a good tip. I'll try it tomorrow.

Here I have done something similar by placing a thin MDF all the way against the frame and glued a thicker one underneath that only goes against the wall. In this way, I got a three cm thick window shelf.

  • A white windowsill made from MDF, with a plant pot on the left. There is a radiator and a colorful cloth underneath the sill.

Looks nice, perfect proportions, you really get fooled into thinking the board is thicker than it is.

Turned out like this
Pretty satisfied. Only used material & impregnation I had at home.
Thanks for the tips. It was quite hard to saw out the side that is thinner.
Used a jigsaw & Fein.
