Moved into a new apartment and in a walk-in closet we planned to renovate, we now saw these cracks in the ceiling and wall. The one in the ceiling runs across and the one in the wall goes straight along the whole length at a corner against the plasterboard wall. There also seems to be a small diagonal from the ceiling, but it looks more superficial. The walls are just painted except right at the cracks where it looks like someone at some point tried to fill them, and it has opened up again.

The house was built in the 80s, we haven't seen any other cracks, but all other walls are plastered/wallpapered/painted so no idea how the concrete itself is.

- Are these cracks dangerous or completely normal? Getting mixed responses when trying to google
- My plan was to fully plaster these walls to make it a nice walk-in closet, but will that be enough for these specific cracks? Or would, for example, latex caulk be a better option for them? (Assuming they aren’t more dangerous and require something else, of course…)

Grateful for help, I have a big lump in my stomach now that the house is about to collapse but at the same time, it’s stood for 40 years so

  • Cracks seen in a closet ceiling and wall corner of an apartment, with signs of previous patching attempts. Concern over structural safety is mentioned.
  • Cracks in a painted closet wall and ceiling corner. One main vertical crack runs the length of the wall at the junction, with additional minor surface cracks.
The cracks look completely normal and harmless, so you can be at ease.

It's hard to see how deep and large the cracks are, but it should be possible to skim coat. If they are too large, you'll need to fill them with gypsum plaster first.
