Hello! Smart as I am, I read up on things after diving into them. I pulled up a plastic mat that the previous owner had laid in the basement without thinking. Since the "paper" under the plastic mat was damp, I wanted to remove everything, sand down the floor, and lay a mat that "breathes." So, I pulled up the plastic mat, and under it, there was a very thin paper that the mat was glued to. This paper was/is stuck firmly to the floor as it seems to be glued to the concrete itself. Since I didn't want to sand with so much paper left, I rented a floor stripper today and removed as much of the paper as I could, removing a lot of the "excess paper" so that it can be sanded down now. Since I wasn't sure what all the black stuff was on the concrete floor, I started looking around a bit and realized it might be black glue containing asbestos. Foolishly, I didn't wear a mask or anything while doing this, so I got a bit anxious. I haven't gotten around to sanding the floor yet, but the stripper does break up the paper, so there's quite a bit of dust from that too. I'll send the material for analysis before I start sanding, but I wanted to check if it could be something other than black glue that was used in the past or if there's a way to see that it's not black glue? I read a bit that it could be tar/asphalt. I'm posting a couple of pictures.

Concrete floor with remnants of black adhesive after removing an old vinyl mat and paper lining, possibly containing asbestos, in a room corner with a radiator. Close-up of a concrete floor with a thin, dark layer suspected to be asbestos-containing black adhesive, revealed after removing an old carpet and underlying paper. Removed flooring with black adhesive residue on a concrete basement floor, possibly black mastic with asbestos, taken during a renovation project. Close-up of a concrete floor with residual black adhesive and patches, possibly black mastic containing asbestos, after removing a glued plastic carpet.

I can also say that the house was built in 1965, but I don't know when the plastic mat was laid. The first picture is when I had just pulled up the mat, and the rest are after the floor stripper.

Hello! Did you get an answer on what material it was?

Got this answer: asbestos fibers in the carpet
(The asbestos fibers are in the turquoise upper part of the carpet, not in the fuzz underneath). So it wasn't black glue.

The response needs clarification.
I don't see anything turquoise in any of the pictures. So, there was asbestos in the mat but not in the black mass? Good to know :) ....I had the same black mass und

The plastic carpet itself was of turquoise color, I probably never took a picture and uploaded it here, as I was mostly concerned with the "black mass" which turned out to be no danger.
