Hi! The house is from -77, behind the wallpaper it looks like this. Could this be black glue with asbestos?

  • Person peeling wallpaper to reveal potential asbestos black glue beneath, in a 1977 house renovation inquiry.
  • A hand peeling green wallpaper, revealing black substance underneath.
  • A hand peels off green wallpaper revealing a blackened adhesive with possible asbestos concerns behind it.
Slightly powdery in consistency. If tests show asbestos- does remediation need to be done upon removal?

Looks like black mold. Asbestos-reinforced black glue was used for floor mats, not for wallpapers.

Growth as mentioned... is it some kind of old wet room wallpaper? Looks thick? We had something similar in a smaller bathroom.

Thanks for the response! Not in wet rooms but a regular wall in the living room… But I agree, thick wallpaper!

To clarify the theory of black mold; it looks like Kinnasand wallpaper. These are made from linen thread and paper. Good at retaining moisture. Likely put up with classic starch-based wallpaper paste. Fine nourishment for mold if there should be moisture exposure.
