I am going to replace an old basement door from around the 1950s, I would think. I'm a bit concerned when I see a white putty-like material that has crumbled and a lot has fallen on the floor. Behind this, there is a grey insulating material.
Could this be asbestos? What does the expertise say?

  • Old wooden basement door with peeling paint, surrounded by crumbling white filler material. Grey insulation visible, raising concerns about asbestos.
  • Old basement door with cracked white putty-like material and gray insulation exposed, raising concerns about possible asbestos presence.
I'm betting it's tagel.

I'll bet it's horsehair.
Thanks for the response! Sounds promising at least.
What do you think about the white powdery lumps?

I've just found similar material in old pipe bends, which I've been told contains asbestos. That's why I'm asking. I think I'm starting to get paranoid.

Thanks for the tip! But it takes too long and is too expensive.

It's okay to feel that way about 1-2 days and under 1000 kr, but it was just because I think it's important to understand that you can never tell from pictures if something contains asbestos, only form an opinion if it's a common place for asbestos-containing material.

Then I agree with the others that it doesn't look like the kind of material that usually contains asbestos in such a place.

Regardless of what it is, it's easy to protect yourself if it's asbestos.
Better to spend the money on protective equipment.

So, you need a half mask with a P3 filter, protective gloves, and single-use protective clothing.

Then keep others away from the work area and clean up with the protective equipment on, and put waste in sealed bags to take to the recycling center and hand it in as suspected asbestos. After that, a thorough airing out.
