I am in the process of laying floorboards on the attic floor with chipboard to create some storage space. However, the chimney pipe comes up near the entrance, and my question is how close I can place the floorboards to the chimney pipe without getting a fail from the chimney sweep. Also wondering if there is any specific insulation that should be used around it. The previous owner seems to have cleared around the pipe and removed the insulation (Isover glass wool) around it. I assume it was at the chimney sweep's request. Attached are pictures of how it looks.

  • Attic floor with chipboard and exposed insulation around a chimney pipe, tools and wooden planks visible, indicating ongoing renovation work.
  • Attic floor installation with chipboard, featuring a chimney pipe surrounded by missing insulation. Tools are seen nearby. Inquiry about safe flooring distance.
  • Attic floor with a chimney pipe surrounded by partially removed insulation and wooden boards, showing ongoing renovation work.
You can have wood up to the extra insulation, you might need to wrap an extra layer of insulation above the existing extra insulation if the wood comes too close to the top edge of the extra insulation.

Thank you, now I know how to do it! 😀

It looked about the same in our attic, but during the latest fire safety inspection, the chimney sweep removed the insulation closest to the flue. Apparently, there were updated regulations where insulation and combustible materials had increased distances. That being said, I would check with your chimney sweep how close you can place the sawdust.
