Hello!
I recently bought a house and am now renovating the interior. I am currently working in what will be the future bedroom, and on one side of the room is the chimney breast with a layer of some kind of plaster on it. I had a vision to remove that layer to reveal the chimney breast and enhance it. However, I'm worried that too much of the mortar will come off if I remove it.

It's our first house, so I'm not particularly knowledgeable and learning as I go along. Do you have any tips and ideas?

  • Peeling plaster on a wall revealing red bricks, with a blue broom leaning against it, in a room undergoing renovation.
  • Exposed brick wall with plaster partially removed, revealing red bricks and mortar beneath.

What disappears/comes off when you remove the plaster or whatever it is on the chimney breast can easily be fixed later with some mortar.

Just remember that if you use the flue channels in the chimney, the plaster is part of the fire protection, it seals against leakage. That means it should remain if you are using the fireplace.
