I am about to tackle the task of casting a free-standing entrance staircase with two steps in two directions, according to the sketch below. As I have never cast before, I have a lot of unanswered questions even before I start the work. I'll begin by asking the following two questions, so that I can start with the form, and perhaps additional questions may arise later.

I want my staircase to have the same surface texture as a regular smooth garden slab. What material should I use in the mold to achieve this? Will form plywood result in a surface that is too smooth? Would it be better to use 21x170 exterior paneling and turn the planed side inward in the mold, or will any knots ruin the result?

How do I achieve the right surface texture on the treads? Isn't a board-dragged surface too coarse and a steel-troweled surface too smooth?
