Anyone encountered this phenomenon before and can explain why there is a carpet nailed inside the wall? Could it be for soundproofing, maybe fire protection? All other interior walls seem to be completely hollow without insulation.

A circular opening in a wall showing a section of carpet-like material attached, potentially for soundproofing or fire protection. A hole in a textured wall revealing layers of material, including wood and a fabric-like layer, possibly for insulation or soundproofing.

I have now received information that it is some kind of fire protection mat and it of course contains asbestos. It's unfortunate and troublesome that the holes are already made.

Has anyone made the same mistake and has tips on how to handle any fibers that may have spread?

mop the floors

Got tips about air purifiers with HEPA filter, but don't know how effective it is. But we will do wet cleaning, but how quickly must it be done? We have vacuumed with a vacuum cleaner with HEPA filter. How quickly do the fibers really air out if you have the ventilation on forced, for example?

Dry as quickly as possible and then air/vent out the rest.

I have now wet-mopped all the floors on the ground floor.

It's tough when you can't see the fibers and know that probably the whole family is breathing them in. :(

I have at least taped over the holes, so nothing more spreads until we get the final results of the samples I sent in. But it's most likely an asbestos mat. The holes are to be filled with ventilation ducts. Do you have any tips on how to seal around this so no more dust comes into the house?

You need to wet-mop all horizontal surfaces, e.g., on furniture. It's good to repeat it after a few days when more fibers have settled down.

Thank you for the tips. How does one think about textiles, like sofas? Can you vacuum with a regular Hepa 14 vacuum cleaner?

Probably better than nothing. If the sofa has removable covers, you can take them off. Textiles like cushions that can be moved outside can preferably be shaken or similar outdoors, and items that can be machine washed can be done so.
