Buying construction materials abroad
Wasn't the difference greater than that? What was included in these kitchens, just the cabinet framework or were appliances included?Jesca_j said:We calculated the cost of two identical kitchens at IKEA in Poland and Sweden, and the prices were 38000:- and 30000:- respectively.
(The cheaper one is in Poland.)
The prices are available online for both countries and the items have the same names, so it's easy to compare the prices. For some cabinets, the price is the same, and for others, there's a huge difference.
I saw in another thread that David had been to Poland and had the items shipped home by truck. To avoid hijacking that thread, I'll ask my question here instead.
It sounds like a great idea to have everything delivered home. We've been considering going there, but it's the transportation of all our items home that's made us hesitate. Did you deliver what you bought to the transport company, or did you buy it from the store including delivery? How did you find the flatbed company? What is the cost for a truckload?
THANKS in advance!

Consumer Europe & the Swedish Competition Authority have conducted a price comparison on various IKEA products. They have concluded that the products are cheapest in Poland!!
The press release can be found here: http://www.konsumenteuropa.se/mallar/sv/pressmeddelande.asp?lngArticleId=3101&lngCategoryId=1352

Those who want to search for appliances available in Poland can find a lot of products and prices on http://ewabymail.pl. I don't know if it's 'the best' site in Poland but I was tipped off about this by a colleague who works in Poland. Since I don't know Polish, I don't know if they accept orders from Sweden! Maybe someone with better Polish knowledge can answer this?
We are considering buying everything we can think of in Latvia, but the question is where to store the whole lot?! For those of you who have bought various building materials in, for example, Poland, have you bought everything at once and stored it under a tarp, or how have you done it?
We drove around and scouted the first few days and shopped on the last two. We had a van with us and filled it with stuff.Betina said:
Thank you for the answers, but what did you do with everything once you were home? Did you not shop until the framework was in place, or did you not shop in such volumes that you needed to store some before it was actually up? We want to buy both building materials and most of the interior from abroad.
We will only be in Poland for the day. Coming in the morning, going home in the evening.
From what I've heard, you can manage a maximum of 2 department stores in one day.
Now I'm wondering which department stores are recommended?
We will be looking at stainless steel range hoods, tiles and ceramics, as well as bathroom furniture. The ones we're traveling with might check out appliances such as fridge, freezer, stove.

A bit of fun trivia: I was browsing through some catalogs and found our Polish Kolo Morgana sinks and saw that Ifö has started selling them in Sweden under the name Ifö Kvadrat http://www.ifo.se/templates/Products____2001.asp. ;D
Poland has a lot of nice stuff.
Best regards,
David

I would be very happy if someone could recommend any good stores in the Gdansk/Gdynia area that sell kitchens and tiles. (The usual hardware stores, Praktiker, OBI, Castorama, and LeroyMerlin had a somewhat poor selection I think.)
