Hello!
I am in the process of cutting a hole for our extension. There will be an interior staircase. For those who know how to build an interior staircase, I have a few questions.

Background:
We want a pine staircase. It will be a straight staircase. The total possible length is 3200 mm (horizontal measurement). The height from the ground floor to the upper floor is 2700 mm. So, I assume it will be a somewhat steep staircase. The width is 950 mm.

1) What type of wood should be used for the stringers and steps? (Dimension, type of wood, etc.)
2) What are the minimum and maximum standard dimensions for tread depth and riser height?
3) How thick should the steps be? (45mm)
4) How do you calculate the exact placement of the steps?

I would appreciate any advice and answers to some or all of the questions.

Hi. I'm in a similar situation. Currently building a landing staircase. 38 degree angle In my case, I have quite a lot to consider (the basement staircase underneath, the roof trusses that support the dormer on one side are right in the middle of the landing, 3300mm floor to floor, limited space, etc.)

1: I've acquired laminated wood in 56*270mm for the stringers (standard dimension) 2: There's a "rule" that 2 treads + 1 riser should be approximately 630mm (in my case 2*240 + 185= 645mm) the treads will be 270mm including the nosing. 3: Haven't found suitable material (laminated wood is available in 42*270mm but isn't standard stock, apparently expensive), but want about 35mm (I'll be laying parquet on the staircase, so I don't want the steps too thick) in the basement staircase from -54 the steps are 30mm and they have worked for over 50 years =) 4: I've drawn mine in profile with Autocad

So if anyone knows of inexpensive laminated wood about 35mm thick in southern Sweden, tips would be nice. Cutting sheets lengthwise is not a problem, i.e., shard widths with 270mm + some space for the saw blade is fine.

Good luck with the staircase. PS On www.thewoodworkingchannel.com there are 2 episodes about staircase manufacturing under the program "The Router Workshop."

Best regards, TRMaster
