Hi! I'm planning to build an outdoor gym according to the following design. It consists of 95x95 posts and galvanized steel pipes. My question is, how can I best attach the pipes to the posts?

My first thought was to drill halfway through the post from one direction, 4.25 cm with a drill bit of the same diameter as the pipe (33.7mm) and then insert it. Then drill through the post and pipe from another direction and place a screw so that the pipe doesn't rotate. I think this looks pretty neat, but unfortunately, I don't believe I'll get the stability I want. For the construction to remain stable when swinging, all parts need to be stable against each other.

What other good ways are there to join the pipe and post?

Could one use a wing screw - and screw through the post and into the pipe? Does it drill/tap and make them fasten to each other?

  • Box of Essve wingscrews labeled 4.2x32, 250 pieces, with a green lid, used for outdoor applications.
I think it will be difficult to get it stable as it is drawn. I would probably have used at least 3 threaded rods and connected them, one at each end and one in the middle, then the other pipes can be attached as you planned.

What is a threaded rod? Could I attach the pipes to threaded pipe clamps that I screw into the wood instead?

One of these

Threaded rod FZB, 1 meter long, displayed on a retail website with a price of 29.90, intended for construction use.

Then washer and nut on the outside, drill as planned, then a 6-7mm hole straight through where you insert the rod and tighten the nuts

How did it go? Did you get them fastened? I'm going to do the same thing.

It turned out really well, didn't need to add anything extra, it's super stable as it is with just the bars. Found flanges to attach the pipes, sold by a company specializing in building staircase railings.

Looks like it turned out great, we are in the process of planning and purchasing for our outdoor gym and got curious about how you chose to anchor your posts? Also, what dimensions did you choose, we were considering 95/95, is that what you used for this?

We went with 95x95 and it feels absolutely right in hindsight as well. We have sandy soil - drilled with a 120mm earth auger about 60-70cm deep. Put in the posts and poured in coarse concrete. About half a bag per post. It sits rock solid and doesn't wobble when you swing.

Thank you very much for the info :)

Hey

Nice build. Planning to build something similar.

Wondering what pipes you used (and where you bought them), and where you bought the flanges that fit the pipes?
