I wonder if there's anyone here who has built a pantry under a staircase. Currently, there are 2 open "half-landing staircases" (see photo) where we're thinking of placing a pantry underneath with a door (similar to photo no. 2).
Anyone have pictures of how this can turn out or maybe even advise against it?
I realize the first step is to make the staircase "closed" but then what?

Note: borrowed photos from Google

  • Open tread staircase with a landing, featuring a person sitting beside it on a chair. Ideal spot for installing a pantry underneath the steps.
  • Wooden staircase with an open understair space used as a storage area with coats, shoes, and a fire extinguisher.

Everything works except small children running:D But then it becomes a dry storage or are you thinking it should be cool with holes through the outer wall. It will be a lot of insulation, not much space left. But as I said, build according to your own taste.

This is how I did it. But with a straight staircase then!

  • An organized pantry with wooden shelves filled with canned goods, jars, and packaged foods, viewed through an open door.

Did you enclose the staircase, i.e. put the wall against the side of the staircase so that the staircase is still hanging by itself? Or is the wall supporting the steps?

I have considered enclosing our straight (almost, it turns at the bottom) staircase only.

The problem I can foresee is that if you have a 180-degree angled staircase and completely enclose it, it might be difficult to move large furniture up and down depending on width, steps, etc.

New construction as planned from the beginning. Outside stairs towards the hall have a wall up under the stringer only. Wooden staircase with a decorative wall featuring circular accents, leading to a hallway. The space appears to be newly built or renovated.

Thanks for the pictures and input. I'll see what I do here. It will probably be in the fall that I build it.

Is that a doghouse or a kiddie jail at the bottom?

Works as both! But primarily a doghouse so the kids leave the dog alone.

Works great to build in again, but probably better as just storage than as a pantry, I think. The neighbor made it very easy for himself when he built it in: took leftover pieces of laminate flooring he laid in the hallway, sawed it to size, and screwed it onto the back edge of the steps.

I've been considering enclosing our space to create storage, mainly for out-of-season outerwear, but we'll probably end up with a darker hallway, and that's not so fun. Maybe if we only build underneath, but it might not look quite right, or so I thought until I saw the "doghouse" :)

The tricky part is the choice of wall; the house has slat-plastered siporex walls, for better or worse, so it will probably have to be studs and slat-plastered gypsum.

The front door is basically only used for guests, and the twin stroller that's visible is mostly there because it takes up the least space there. And we haven't gotten around to selling it. The twins are old enough anyway :) Wooden staircase with white railing, a wooden dresser, vacuum, and a stroller in a hallway. Discussion on converting space under stairs for storage.

Did you manage to create something good here? I'm about to do something similar and am looking for some inspiration.

Hey, have you found a good solution? I have a similar staircase and want to build something nice or smart storage like you.
