Build Raised Garden Beds - Brick / Leca
Hello,
We want to grow more in raised garden beds. That is, you build some form of "wall" out of materials like leca, peat, brick, or sleepers. Then you fill it up with soil and plant the plants. The garden bed should be around 30cm high.
We are now considering using brick to raise it up. Peat might look nicer, but it is not durable and can be quite expensive in the long run.
I have looked at many different masonry techniques. But it feels like they are a bit overkill.
How do I build a lower wall, which can withstand several winters, using brick? My thought is to dig up, lay in gravel/sand, start with a layer of lecablock (which will not be visible later), and then build with brick on top. Does anyone have a better idea?
It is quite a few meters of wall that will need to be built, around 50-70 meters in total. So it can cost _a little_ extra if it simplifies things.
Best regards,
Stefan

Hi, how's it going?
I think these are nice though a bit expensive. http://www.stenbolaget.se/utomhus/murar/

I am also interested in what you come up with. I have considered a similar project myself in the form of some kind of permanent "flower boxes" in front of our deck, which has a very ugly edge (half a meter above ground with the bearing beams on top of loose cinder blocks) that I would like to hide. I have mostly thought along the lines of casting a foundation that I build up from, but it will probably be a few years before I have time for it.
I am currently finishing my garden bed that I'm building without used bricks. I cast a reinforced slab about 10 cm thick with coarse concrete, on which I then build.
The plan is for it to be 6 x 3 meters and 5 bricks high when everything is completed.

We have also planned to build planting beds out of used bricks. We have the materials at home and want to start building but don't know where to begin. Does anyone have the knowledge? We can handle the actual building but what should we consider regarding the foundation. That is, the base material, depth, etc. Ours are about 1 meter wide and 2.5 long. About 40 - 50 cm in height above ground.
