I have a bunch of Billy bookcases that all have the same problem - the shelves are sagging.

I have considered a solution to this quite a bit, ranging from routing a groove and inserting a piece of iron of some kind, to screwing a metal strip to the underside of each shelf. Option 1 is time-consuming but will work well, option 2 is simple but will be visible. And thus requires a nice piece of metal of some sort - something I have yet to find.

Has anyone had similar problems and found a solution?

I had a similar problem with a bookshelf. In warm weather, the shelves sagged!
The solution was to screw long screws through the long side of the bookshelf, through the shelves.
Then I attached a board to the back edge on the underside of the shelves and the back panel.
Not the most elegant solution, but it worked.

What is the width of the shelves?

Plank against the back edge is exactly what I'm thinking, but in metal – Then it won't take up much space.. Maybe a really long L-angle simply, preferably white lacquered....?
