Hello!

In my house from '39, we have boards in the ceiling of all the rooms in the basement. When I insert a screwdriver into a gap, sawdust falls down, which I assume is meant as insulation.

These boards, do they serve a function aside from holding the sawdust in place?
Can they be safely removed and replaced with insulation and drywall ceiling instead?
Or do they have some sort of structural function?
 
I have exactly the same at my place - House from '49. Mine is clad with masonite outside the tongue and groove.
One solution is to keep the tongue and groove and screw drywall directly onto it - If you really don't want to remove all the sawdust and fill with new insulation, that is.
If the ceiling isn't too uneven, I would go with the solution of screwing the drywall directly on.

The "boards" are most likely not load-bearing in any way.
 
There are a couple of masonite boards around the old wood-burning stove, which I have almost torn down! I was considering embedding the electricity in the basement and then the ceiling is a suitable place! Do you think you can slide a board down the middle to be able to place some vp pipes? Or will a bunch of sawdust come down then?
Then I will screw the gypsum directly on!

However, I would like to have spotlights in the basement, but the ceiling height is not enough to lower the ceiling. Cutting open to set cans will be a heck of a job considering all the sawdust!

How did you handle the lighting in your basement? (I won't be using the basement as a cold cellar but as a small TV room... so I don't want the practical fluorescent lights!)
 
It will probably collapse a lot if you pick a plank.
My electricity is in steel pipes in the ceiling with surface-mounted boxes, and my goal is to batten down about 15-20mm and put plasterboard on it to get the plasterboard at the same level as the boxes and use furniture spots (Halogene) or LED spots to maintain ceiling height. That way, I avoid "pots" briefly...
I have just over 2200 to start with and can "afford" to sacrifice a couple of centimeters.
 
also considered furniture spotlights, will see if I have the energy to lower with studs, it will still be about 3-4cm lower in ceiling height then, have to feel it out! but thanks for your answers!
