I have torn down an old stretched ceiling fabric in the living room and will now put up a new ceiling, either drywall or panels. But along the walls, there are currently 25x120mm planks that the fabric was nailed to. These cannot be removed without having to tear down other things that I would rather not mess with.

I'm trying to find something reasonable to build with so I can attach the drywall or panels across the entire ceiling, but 28x70 furring strip becomes too high, and I can't attach it well at the outer edges. If it's drywall, it's less of an issue, but the panels will probably need to be nailed all the way to the edge so they don't risk splitting in any way.

Is it possible to use 25x48mm battens, or do you think it will crack with such narrow battens if you nail 2 panels into them with nails?

49mm width is sufficient for joining. But the margins are gone, so be careful that they are placed "exactly" right, center joint - center batten.
