Attaching a sill to a concrete slab

I'm going to attach the sill with expansion bolts and plan to drill through the sill into the concrete. My question is how close to the edge of the concrete slab can I drill without risking the slab cracking.

The pressure exerted by the expansion bolt on the concrete should depend on the dimensions of the bolt and the hole. Whether that pressure is too much likely depends on the placement of the borehole, the concrete's strength, and reinforcement. It should be fine to drill in the center of the sill, right?

What dimension do you have on the sill and what size expander are you planning to use?

I used 8mm in the middle of the sill which was 170mm and it worked perfectly. You can always move the expander in a bit if you're unsure; it shouldn't affect the strength.

My sill is 145 mm and will be placed so that about 2 cm is outside the concrete edge. I have bought both 8 mm and 10 mm expander bolts since I couldn't decide in the shop :-D

So your bolt ended up 8-9 cm from the edge? How long was your bolt? Mine are 120 mm and need to go 60 mm into the slab.

Being frugal, I took the expanders from work, they were about 90 mm. But I countersunk them about 10 mm with a 25 mm wood drill. So about 45-50 mm should be in the slab.

I see no reason to use 10 mm if you have 8 mm, carpenters use a lot of nail plugs, but maybe someone with better knowledge in concrete and strength can answer.

Hilti may be expensive, but they have good data on all their products.
Example on M10, you can probably compare it with your M10 expanders if you can't find anything on the manufacturer's website.

Why don't you use expansion nails?

I'm the type who is both inexperienced and likes to have the option to redo things that go wrong, and surely it is easier to detach a sill that is attached with bolts than if it is attached with expansion nails?
