Attach stud to wall

Hello

I am going to install a baby gate on the stairs. I need to extend the wall next to the stairs with a 7 cm deep stud:





What is the best way to attach the stud to the wall? Is it a long screw through the entire stud and into the wall that is needed?

You could also consider countersinking the screws to maybe half the thickness of the joist, so you don't have to use such insanely long screws.

I don't have a countersink, but maybe it will work to pre-drill with a thick drill through half of the joist?

That's right. First drill with 22 mm to half the depth of the stud and the rest with 9 mm. Then you can secure the stud with lag screws and washers.

If you do not countersink the screw, make sure you have screws with a countersunk head. Regarding the length, it should go in at least 3-4 cm into the wall if there are wooden studs in it. So 110-120 mm screws will work.
