We currently have a kitchen hood mounted in a casing that goes around the chimney, but the casing is riveted to the ceiling and surrounding walls, not to the chimney.

Both my wife and I would like to get rid of the large casing and instead have a wall-mounted hood, but we're unsure if it's a good idea to drill and screw it into the chimney. In the kitchen, it's plastered, and the kitchen cabinets where the stove is placed don't seem to be screwed into the chimney but rather stand on legs.

Are there too many risks with drilling into and mounting a wall-mounted kitchen hood on the chimney? We currently have two inserts that we use a few times a month during winter, mostly for the cozy factor.

The area responsible chimney sweep is the specialist in this, but it is important that the channels in the chimney are tight and one must consider the fire risk with a warm chimney, so there is probably a good reason that it is done the way it is done.
