Could this be asbestos? built in 1985

  • Close-up of a hand holding a small piece of material, possibly asbestos, from a building constructed in 1985.
  • Close-up of a hand lifting a brown speckled tile with visible cables underneath, questioning if it contains asbestos, built in 1985.
  • Person holding a peeled corner of a worn linoleum floor tile, inquiring about possible asbestos content, built in 1985.
Maybe, submit for analysis, costs between 500-1000kr.

"Asbestos - check before
An important thing to check is for those of you living in a building constructed during the 70s. Asbestos was used during that time in certain floor adhesives, especially if it's about linoleum or vinyl floors. This means you can get into real trouble if you plan to remove such a carpet.

You must check before, and it is best to take a small piece of the carpet and submit it for analysis. You can contact the Environmental Board in your municipality for further guidance on how to proceed on this matter - and for future demolition if it turns out there is asbestos in the adhesive."

I think analysis is the only thing that can reassure you, as the forum will undoubtedly see wild guesses both for and against...

In 1985, no asbestos-containing materials were to be used, but of course, if it was a penny-pincher who built and laid a 10-year-old vinyl floor or used 10-year-old glue, then it is possible.

Feels unreasonable that it would be in something built in '85

No, there is hardly any asbestos in that carpet, looks far too new.

good and hear that others also believe it's not asbestos, assume it's not asbestos since it was built in 1985.

We had a flooring contractor in the area who offered such good prices in the 70s that he was boycotted by the carpet suppliers. He then ordered a whole truckload of floor coverings which were said to last well into the 80s. I can't imagine that the floor installers discarded their stock just because a new law came into effect. But the likelihood of getting an older carpet probably decreased as the 80s went on.
