You don't think it could be some type of tretex, also called tex Insulit, etc., that you see stamped? In them, asbestos doesn't add anything and shouldn't be present there. However, they are excellent as reinforcement for the poor insulation capability of the plank/board walls of that time.
 
Looks more like fiberboard, i.e., masonite/tretex as GK100 mentioned. Likely nailed on later.

Masonite became hugely popular in the 1920s and was widely used as material in walls, both interior and exterior.
