Hi, I'm putting up tongue and groove boards on the roof for the first time ever. The boards aren't straight and it's difficult to press the joints together. Is it poor quality boards I've got or is it not necessary to fully insert the tongue into the groove?

Everything must fit tightly together, or else the next round will be even more skewed.

Yes, they should be aligned as much as possible.
A tip is to constantly measure from the end of the rafter to ensure the rows are straight.
Preferably, snap a chalk line every 50 cm or so to use as a reference.

If it starts to fan out, it won't be fun at the end...
