Hi Byggahus! The upstairs project is finally complete after about 2 years of work. This of course means my wife is asking me to dismantle the stairs to see if they can be restored.

I removed the board that was glued to the step to investigate what kind of stairs we have. My question is whether it's most suitable, possible, and smart to try and use the old staircase or if we should attempt to install a new one similar to what the previous owners did, but in a style we like. If it is possible, with a bit more work to make the old staircase look nice again, that would certainly be a bonus since we appreciate older details.

I am attaching pictures. Please provide any input you have. Anything you know regarding materials, any obstacles you've encountered, and if you can determine what kind of stairs we have from the pictures.

  • Old wooden staircase with exposed worn treads, partially stripped of covering, contrasting with a newly renovated light wood floor at the top.
  • Close-up of an old wooden staircase with worn steps and removed surface, showing unfinished wood underneath.
  • Close-up of worn, rusty stair treads, with peeling layers and visible wood grain, in a renovation project.
  • Close-up of an old, worn wooden staircase step with visible paint and glue residues, showing weathered texture and signs of restoration work.
