I have a Hultsfred house from 1962 that is mostly in its original condition. The roof was renovated in 2011, otherwise most things are untouched. We lose a lot of heat upwards and, as they say, we are heating for the crows. The roof trusses have screws, raw boards, and previously had tretex underlayment. Now, as I renovate, I am covering the walls with OSB and gypsum and the ceiling with gypsum. The house becomes tighter, and I have installed window vents. The attic is in quite poor condition. In several places, there are only newspapers, and the insulation that is there is flattened, mostly damaged, and poorly covering. In some roof truss sections, there is nothing, just an old door.
I am, of course, planning to add more insulation so that we don't lose so much heat and have better sound insulation against outdoor noise. However, the question is whether I should add a vapor barrier or not. And how much should we modify the existing structure? Half of the house already has gypsum on the ceiling, so a vapor barrier would have to be added from above. It is not feasible to remove the gypsum and place it between the gypsum and the raw boards, as some recommend. But the question is also whether to have plastic? Many say you shouldn't start changing functioning structures. The fact that it works today without any damage is, of course, because there is no condensation. With more insulation, the risk increases. There is currently no soffit ventilation in the form of an air gap. You can see condensation on the window in the attic, and an inspector has recommended better ventilation in the attic. The question is how extensive should we make it and affect the structures. The idea was to install masonite air gaps at the eaves. Install ventilation grilles at the gable near the ridge. And use plastic and insulate the attic. What are your thoughts, and is there anyone who knows this like the back of their hand?
Are there recommendations on how much insulation should be applied?
