Sigh. The wife nags about smooth walls. Thinking renovation plasterboard But maybe better with 12 mm "real"?

I agree!
I can't see any reason to use 6mm except if the last few mm are crucial due to space constraints.
 
I have a feeling the 12mm gypsum is cheaper as well..
 
And also easier to plaster the panel joints as they have a deeper and wider chamfering that makes it smoother with tape and joint compound.
 
I agree with the chorus recommending standard drywall. I also find that standard drywall is easier to screw. With the 6mm drywall, I've experienced that it's easy for the screw heads to go through the drywall even if you tighten gently.
