Gluing should reduce the risk of creaking, but the ridges should be flat to ensure proper glue joints.

It is an old joist, so it is quite rough in places, unfortunately. Then I'll have to bring out the plane, and in that case, I'll have to go through the whole thing. I'll have to tweak a bit and possibly apply a lot of glue in certain places so that it fills out. I could also screw a bit tighter, and it should work out well.
 
nail masonite and lay the carpet on it.
 
As a historic building caretaker, I have removed many vinyl floors to expose the wooden floors again, and nearly all have been laid on masonite. You save labor and preserve an original floor for the future.
