....it's a bit of a shame that there's MDF there.....plywood would have been easier to work with...

Measured a 4 mm Essve screw now, it has a core diameter of 2.5 mm so test with that.

So it's not really tricky to screw into MDF, and I've also understood that MDF is good if it needs to be spray painted. Much less preparation work than plyfa.

Yes, if it's going to be painted, MDF is better.

I was actually thinking about the panel in the ceiling, not the enclosure for the pipe, but I realize that what you're screwing into now is not in the ceiling, so my comment is not relevant.
