Screw for MDF

I will screw angle brackets/building brackets into 19mm MDF, which screws should I use?

I'm not joining MDF or screwing in or near the edges.

I tested regular round wood screws, and I feel they slip incredibly. It was difficult to get the initial hole before the screw grips.

I usually pre-drill a hole that is slightly smaller in diameter than the screw to be used, e.g. a 3mm drill for a 3.5mm screw, but whether that's right, I don't know!

MDF should always be pre-drilled, the material is so dense that it has nowhere to go when you drive in the screw.

Even if you screw in the middle of an MDF board?

do you pre-drill with one size smaller, so if the screw is 4mm you use a 3mm pre-drill?

Measure the screw's "core diameter", i.e. not the thread, and use a slightly smaller drill bit.

Pretty tricky to get to the core with calipers when the dimensions are as small as 3.5x16mm. Should be possible to estimate.

unfortunately, the manufacturers do not indicate the "core measurement" either.

I don't think it's a problem, but it's no worse than you testing .

It's not exactly critical with precise measurements. I would probably first try just making an "entry hole" with a tool.

Somewhere it is, indeed! I seem to remember that it's unfortunately quite worn out.

Try with a 2.5 mm drill.
