Hello,

We are planning to purchase a smaller Contura wood-burning stove for coziness. We have found the perfect spot, but to make it work, we need to bend the chimney 45 degrees first before between the ceiling/floor and then angle it up towards the ridge after the roof on the second floor via the insulated attic to the ridge. The chimney would be about 6 meters. I assume the draft will be reduced, but can you calculate by how much? Can it be compensated for by a larger diameter?

Grateful for any tips.
 
I think setting 1 angle is okay, but not 2.. I don't think the chimney sweep would like that either...
you don't need to go out with the chimney at the ridge, but do this on the roof instead
there are rules for how high you must go up.. with the pipe..

It works perfectly with two angles, as I have built here.

Things to consider:
you must have an inspection hatch just below the upper angle to ensure it can be cleaned.
the draft becomes slightly worse due to the angles, but you can compensate with a longer pipe.

As etiol says, it might be better to go straight up and out if possible, and use a considerably longer pipe outside, but that's not always feasible. Here, for example, the pipe ended up directly in a valley gutter and truss, so the only option was to run it diagonally.

Is the roof angle exactly 45 degrees? NVIs modules can be customized with any angle so that the pipe runs parallel to the roof.

When I think about it a little more.......how the heck would it look with just ONE angle? Then the pipe won't come out vertically......!

What I mean by an angle is to put two 45-degree angles into each other or as close as possible, then it becomes one soft angle that is 90 degrees. Instead of following the roof up to the ridge...
The pipe does not need to go over the ridge...
A smoke pipe that follows the roof requires a more secure installation because the risk is greater for heat spread and resulting fire...
This is not something I want to recommend doing...

Thank you. From what I can see, two angles seem to work. We can easily have a soot door in the insulated attic (angle 2). Potentially, the chimney can go straight up, but then it ends up at the valley / dormer.....feels less good.
 
Eti, I'm not quite sure I understand what you mean. It would be easier to see the options if we had some pictures of the installation site. As for fire safety, I assume you go through a ceiling above the stove, and then it's natural to proceed with fully insulated pipe => 5cm to combustible materials. Not too complicated.

Byggis: I went both diagonally and along the roof just to avoid valleys and the upper frame on the rafters. It turned out well in the end, but it was quite complicated with trimming of the rafters and very cramped due to poor ceiling height where we went through the ceiling.

I can also note that cleaning is quite tricky because the plumb bob and brush don't make their way down the angled part (22 degrees) on their own. This means that cleaning the diagonal part has to be done via the inspection hatch, which is fiddly until you've figured out the tricks....
 
The soot door should probably be placed at a bend to facilitate cleaning.
