Hello!

I am building a garage and see that my builder has used Windy wind protection instead of PE film aging-resistant plastic. According to him, it's the same thing.
What does the expertise say?

  • Interior of garage under construction with Windy vapor barrier on ceiling, wooden beams, a ladder, and construction materials scattered on the floor.
  • Architectural garage plan detailing wall and roof layers, including wind barrier, PE film, wood beams, and mineral wool insulation.
That is diffusion-open, which is not the same as age-resistant plastic where you want high vapor resistance.

If it shouldn't be heated, you don't want plastic wrap due to the risk of condensation.

IF it should be heated, it depends on the moisture addition whether windbreaker fabric is sufficient or not. If you drive the car in every day with 2dm of snow that then melts and evaporates, you will have problems. If you're just going to have shelves with nails, the problem is likely nonexistent.

Yes, it's not the same thing.
But sometimes it can be a better choice, if it's a building that is not heated, has a low temperature, or is only heated parts of the year, it can be better.
Actually, it also depends on how much moisture you suspect will be there.

But at least it's not a major mistake, some want it diffusion-open in the walls in such buildings (which you now got) others want it diffusion-tight (as I myself after many anguishes over the choice finally chose for my garage).

Thanks for the response! My builder usually keeps track of such things, but I thought I'd ask the question anyway.
