Just became homeowners, which we get access to at the end of August.
One-story + basement.
My wife and I feel that the basement staircase feels cramped and narrow (see picture).
We were thinking of removing the wall on the left.
But also to widen the staircase, do you think it's possible? If yes, do you think it's possible to widen the existing staircase or is it best to open up the "stair hole" and have a staircase carpenter build a new one?
Whether the staircase can be widened depends, among other things, on how the intermediate floor is constructed.
How far apart are the beams in the floor structure?

Concrete floor. I interpret that as a cast solid slab then? 🤔
I don't have the measurements of the staircase now. But I will find out!
Unfortunately, it becomes nearly impossible to widen the existing staircase. It could have been done if it was the right-hand wall that was to be removed. But it is the turn of the staircase, which goes to the left, that causes the problem. Perhaps it could be possible to demolish the lower part and redo the turn. Otherwise, it will mean redoing the entire staircase, unfortunately.

That was exactly what I wanted to hear, or not. But great input! Have to rethink it once more then! 😬
Here is what our basement staircase looks like, not sure if it can be any inspiration.

Thinking that if you don't need the door, you can open it up a bit to make it airier.
I also believe that the dark wallpaper with a motif makes it feel smaller.
The dark wallpaper!!! It's a Cadillac '55.
TS. Take it easy and settle in, and you'll see that you'll get used to the stairs. It always itches when the house is new, but it's an itch that decreases over time.

Still something dark that makes the staircase feel smaller and cave-like.
Yet something dark that makes the staircase feel smaller and cave-like.
But a strongly mitigating circumstance.
Like when you're lying alone in a big bed thinking, "How nice. Finally, I can spread out." But then a beautiful girl comes along and happily jumps into the bed, and then it gets cramped again.

"Yes, that's all we had today in Things That Never Happened. Next week: aliens."
