Having made a name for myself as an "asbestos fanatic" here on the forum, I can now harshly conclude that it is alarming to receive the verdict "no asbestos" in black adhesive under an old plastic floor from an analysis company, only to then receive the verdict "Anthophyllite in black adhesive under flooring" from another company.

I hadn't even planned to test the flooring again, but a piece of it simply went along when I analyzed plaster/mortar. The flooring was kind of glued to this chimney.

Alarming, I think!

I take the opportunity to ask if you think the asbestos present in the black adhesive poses any danger as long as I don't tamper with the flooring? The flooring is kind of broken at the edges, lying loose in small pieces.
 
How do you mean that the glue should be able to spread in the air so you can inhale it?
 
No, didn't mean it that way. Of course, I hope that the fibers are fairly bound in the glue, but the carpet as such is partially "broken down" into small pieces.

But what I dislike the most right now is that you don't seem to be able to rely on analysis.
 
You might need to clarify a bit, is it asbestos in the glue or in the carpet?

Yes, is it possible that the carpet contains asbestos as filling material? However, the analysis company should have been able to rule this out, since you mention that their statement was about the glue. Google:

Asbestos in the glue! According to the analysis company.
 
The use of asbestos in vinyl flooring was primarily to increase resistance to wear and secondarily to spread heat from a fire, so the progress of the fire was slowed for a while, but I find no reason for having asbestos in the adhesive and wonder if that was really the case. Could it also be to delay a fire??? It can't be about wear and tear.

Anyway, Stina, I don't think you should worry because there can hardly be large amounts coming loose where you are. You can compare it to, for example, Teknikum in Uppsala (in the 80s), where HUNDREDS of students went through the corridors in outdoor shoes, wearing down asbestos-reinforced vinyl flooring all day. So much asbestos was released that it POSSIBLY COULD be unhealthy.

Anthophyllite is not asbestos

amphibole mineral with the chemical composition (Mg, Fe)7Si8O22(OH)2 (magnesium, iron, silicate, hydroxide). Anthophyllite is isomorphic with cummingtonite. In some forms, anthophyllite is fibrous and lamellar and used as asbestos.

Sure, so-called black glue is quite a well-known source of asbestos. Even though there are both with and without asbestos. I have no idea why they used asbestos in the glue.

If one wants to interpret the analysis kindly, it could be that the glue in the first analysis actually didn't contain asbestos. Like the carpet layer opened a new can of a different type.

Yes, anthophyllite is indeed a type of asbestos.
It is also clearly described on various sites on the internet.
So, MaxPax, you are absolutely right.
The analysis company also clearly stated in the analysis result that anthophyllite is asbestos.
 
You shouldn't trust Wikipedia too much, as anyone can write anything there, which isn't necessarily verified by a knowledgeable source. I trust Arbetsmiljöverket more. But it's bad on the part of the analysis company not to have better knowledge, as you're paying them for their expertise!

To make things even a bit more difficult, Antophyllite is not always associated with asbestos. It depends on whether it is fibrous...
To put it bluntly, saying it is asbestos is therefore wrong. It can be asbestos, while at the same time it's not certain...
hmmm you can never be satisfied...

But why don't you call the first analysis company and ask them to explain... Why they don't find asbestos...

This is what I found on the Swedish Work Environment Authority.
Actinolite, anthophyllite, and tremolite also occur as non-fibrous minerals.
