A silly question perhaps, but it's swirling in my head and taking up space ;D

Which way do you lay ceiling drywall? Do you want the "long" sides along the length of the room and the light, or the short sides? (just like laying parquet)

My question might be irrelevant because you probably spackle so well that you can't see any seams ;).

But practically, what is the best/easiest/recommended way to lay them?

Yep! Possibly combined with microlitväv. 8-)

I would probably base it on the available studs (and battens) and if it doesn't matter (maybe install the studs myself), I would place the boards so that I get as many whole boards as possible.

I agree, the more whole boards, the more easily spackled edges I think, as an amateur.
