I am planning to cast a proper bowl to have indoors. The thickness will be 3-6 cm. I want it to have a genuine medieval feel and want to use a mortar that is as white as possible and resembles in structure a bit like an old plaster facade.

But what material should I actually use? It's a whole jungle out there! White cement, white mortar, lime mortar...

What is used for plaster facades? What might be suitable when casting, for example, bowls and dishes?
They need to hold up well and not crumble or break when handled.

I thought about varnishing the bowls to get a more durable surface. Is there varnish intended for stone?

Oh, many questions, if I get help with just one, I'll be happy! I'm a complete beginner in this subject :)

For a plaster facade, mortar or plaster mix is used. It is better to cast with concrete that becomes harder. Check out the threads on how to cast a kitchen counter under kitchen.

Perhaps casting is not the best solution. Especially if you want a bit of a medieval style.
I would ask a ceramist if there is a suitable clay you can work with and possibly fire it at their place for a certain fee. Pottery courses are also offered at good prices at, for example, Medborgarskolan among others, which could be a possible way towards your goal.

Good luck!
