Which decorative stone for outdoor wall?

Has anyone successfully glued slate, for example, outdoors on a wall, fence, or something similar fully exposed to weather and wind, and had it work after many years? I have many ideas but am skeptical if there is something that can withstand rain, frost, snow year in and year out.
