Reviving an old thread again.
I need a workbench in the basement and initially thought about buying a countertop at Ikea. But they're only 63.5cm deep, and I want it to be 70/80cm deep.
I'm thinking of a base made of studs like 45x120 or similar. On top of that, a good and durable work surface.
I don't want metal for various reasons. I won't be welding, just need a work surface in the basement.
Should I go with MDF, plywood, or just plain wood?
Isn't MDF sensitive to moisture?
Plywood seems to have a durable surface.
For those of you who have built your own workbenches, what do you use as a work surface, and how has it held up over time?
It didn't turn out exactly as I planned, but it turned out well anyway. I bought tongue and groove 28x120. I've painted the surface with transparent floor paint in several layers. If it doesn't turn out well, I can just screw on a sheet of suitable material. Now I just need to sort and organize the chaos among the tools and other stuff.

Old thread but I'm in the same dilemma now. How was the result of your workbench in hindsight? Is it completely flat? Hasn't warped at all? Did you have to plane and sand a lot to get it even? How durable has the top been? So many questions but I would be extremely grateful for an answer =)

The result turned out okay according to me and my requirements.
It might not be completely 100% even over the surface but enough for me. A little bit wavy. It could probably be sanded completely flat, but I haven't thought about that.
I've considered putting a thin sheet of metal over part of one side.
I haven't used it much, to be honest. It has been completely cluttered with stuff for a long time, but a few weeks ago, I actually cleared it off.
If I were to get a workbench again, I would do the same thing. Unless I found a "real" workbench from a workshop or something similar.
But it's good. It's stable, practical, and quite cheap.
