House built in 1926; I'm working on building a laundry room and planning to install an exhaust fan in one of the old chimney flues.

So I opened up the old vent and see that the entire bottom is covered with some kind of debris. I start vacuuming it up, but become hesitant. These small grains don't look like regular debris, but almost some kind of mini-leca beads or something similar. I'm wondering if it's some kind of moisture-absorbing material or something important… 🤔

Should I leave this in place or remove it?

  • Old chimney vent with debris resembling small Leca balls in the bottom against an orange wall, possibly used for moisture absorption in a 1926 house.

It's trash

Hard to see, but it could be chimney insulation, vermiculite. It looks a bit like gray leca. Might have ended up in the wrong channel.
