Hello.
I needed to replace the ceiling in my brick house from the 1930s. It's plastered on the outside of the brick (two bricks thick wall).

When I tore down the old ceiling, it looked like in the picture, but with some loose old plaster that had fallen down. Should this be plastered again with lime plaster, can I ignore it, or is there another easy solution to do before I put up a new ceiling?

Appreciate all the help 🙏

  • Exposed wooden beams and bricks in a 1930s house ceiling after removing old plaster. Some remnants of white plaster are visible on the bricks.

Are you thinking that there's a bit too little mortar? It's not unusual for it to look like that on the "side that should never be seen." The brick surface visible here probably has never been plastered? Adding more mortar shouldn't be necessary unless it's very drafty.

Exactly. On the other side of the room, most of the plaster remains. I've felt in some places that it's a bit drafty, so it would be nice to only need to fix it right there. It's also missing outside in that spot.

I think they probably plastered the entire wall all the way up when they were at it, but as you say, maybe it's not crucial to repair where the mortar is missing. Thanks for the response.

You don't need to plaster the surface, but it's never wrong to fill the joints between the bricks to reinforce it and avoid drafts if that's a problem..
Remove all loose mortar and refill the masonry joints, and it will be good😊
