We have a sour smell (like urine) that we can sense between the floor and wall. It is localized to a smaller area. The whole room smells, and the intensity of the smell varies from day to day. There was a short period where it didn't smell at all, but then it came back again. It has been going on for just over a month now. We are now removing the laminate floor and find some strange "floor" underneath. Is it a subfloor? It looks like a type of click flooring. How can we remove it most easily? And what could the smell be due to? We first guessed a dead mouse since the smell appeared suddenly and then disappeared. When it returned, we became more doubtful about that theory. It has been moisture measured without any remarks.

  • Close-up of a mysterious floor resembling cork or chipboard, possibly underlayment, located under laminate flooring as described in a renovation discussion post.
  • Close-up of composite flooring resembling a cork pattern, questioned as an unknown subfloor underneath removed laminate.
It's cork-o-plast. Very popular in the 70s, often in kitchens. They are plastic-coated cork panels. Usually glued onto a smooth surface such as masonite.
