Hello,

I have bought a house from the 1910s. The house's foundation, framework, and some of the interior walls are made of concrete.

We have now begun to look over the house and have encountered the following coating on an interior wall. Does anyone know what this is? And for what purpose? The coating doesn't seem to be spread all the way up the wall.

I imagine it is some type of tar coating. Could such a tar coating also contain asbestos?

May contain asbestos, it cannot be determined from a picture, but it almost certainly contains bitumen and PAH. What is the light brown substance to the right? Sealant?

If it is to be removed, take away the entire section it is attached to if possible. That way, you won't have to worry about it.
