Hello,
I am planning to renovate my hallway and partly change the floor. There is a staircase where a board runs down from the handrail, see picture. What is this for? It can hardly be a supporting element and I don't understand how it could help the stiffness of the handrail either. Is it just a matter of cutting it off if I want to?

  • White stair railing with a diagonal wooden plank attached to it, over hardwood flooring in a hallway.
  • White staircase with a wooden beam extending from the handrail. A small white cabinet is positioned at the bottom. Tools and miscellaneous items are visible nearby.

Serves well as a support leg for the actual stairs.

Support the inner corner of the stairs

You can try unscrewing the support leg, but the stair will probably become very wobbly. Walk carefully.
While you are changing the floor, you can issue a walking ban in the stair and remove the leg.

Yes, it IS a supporting detail....

Okay, thanks for the reply, I'll have to remove it while I change the floor, then put it back when the floor is replaced so that it is under tension against the floor.

For information, the board wasn't load-bearing, it's off now and I don't notice any difference. However, I'll put it back soon when the new floor is in place just in case! :)
