What is the board in the staircase for?
Hello,
I am planning to renovate my hallway and partly change the floor. There is a staircase where a board runs down from the handrail, see picture. What is this for? It can hardly be a supporting element and I don't understand how it could help the stiffness of the handrail either. Is it just a matter of cutting it off if I want to?

You can try unscrewing the support leg, but the stair will probably become very wobbly. Walk carefully.
While you are changing the floor, you can issue a walking ban in the stair and remove the leg.

Okay, thanks for the reply, I'll have to remove it while I change the floor, then put it back when the floor is replaced so that it is under tension against the floor.
For information, the board wasn't load-bearing, it's off now and I don't notice any difference. However, I'll put it back soon when the new floor is in place just in case!
