Hello,
Long post that can be summarized: How do we find out what material is behind the drywall without causing damage?
We've just put together a Billy shelf and placed it in the kid's room, and now we need to mount it to the wall properly. The question is how do we know what to use to mount it and what's behind the drywall.
When we bought the apartment, we were vaguely informed that behind some walls in the bedroom there is OSB.
When we drill into the wall the shelf is against, you go in about 13 mm, then there's a gap of a few mm (it feels like), followed by another sheet of some material. I don't see anything but gypsum coming out when I continue drilling into the next sheet, but it might come from the outermost one.
On the other side, there are built-in closets and behind them a gypsum board. After that, there's a gap of a few cm.
So how do we easily find out what the other board is?
And, what do we use to mount the shelf to the wall if the board behind the drywall can't be used? We can't use molly plugs then. Are drywall anchors enough to prevent a Billy shelf from tipping over regardless of how much a little one might climb on it?
