Hello,

We have a sewage pipe in the townhouse from 1967 that seems to have seen its best days. Unfortunately, it is located behind the water heater in the basement and is hardly accessible. I believe it is for the kitchen rather than the toilet. Can anyone guess what the deposits in the joint are and how urgently it needs to be replaced?

Rusty drainpipe with corrosion and buildup near a joint, inside a basement. Difficult to access due to water heater placement.

Looks like the upper part is lead that has been squeezed out of the joint. Could be linen inside.

Urgent.. Is it leaking?
If not, then it's not urgent.

But it's not a big job to replace the pipe with a modern fitting instead.

Thank you. No, it doesn't leak at all, but I'm a little worried that it might start leaking. We haven't had a house for very long, and I'm not sure what should be replaced as a precaution and what shouldn't.

When it looks like this, it is usually on the decline...

But in a villa, the condition of the pipe can vary greatly depending on which part you're looking at.

If you want to find out, a flushing vehicle with a camera is the right way forward.
