Welding in hot-dip galvanized steel pipes
I have a few questions and would gratefully accept opinions and comments about my project, if I can do something better or if I have forgotten anything.
The project is to build a feed enclosure (see photo) of hot-dip galvanized steel pipes with a wall thickness of 3.65 mm and a circumference of 76.1 mm.
Procedure:
The project is to build a feed enclosure (see photo) of hot-dip galvanized steel pipes with a wall thickness of 3.65 mm and a circumference of 76.1 mm.
Procedure:
- cut the pipes to the appropriate length
- drill some drainage holes in the pipe that will become the round ring
- bend the pipes with a hydraulic pipe bender
- at the pipe ends, where the pipes are to be welded, grind off the galvanization with an angle grinder
- weld the pipes using a MIG welder
- post-treat/paint the welds and drainage holes
- I have access to a three-phase ESAB Origo Mig C170 (170 amps) and a colleague has a three-phase ESAB Origo Mig C200 (200 amps). Which of these should I use?
- Which welding wire should I use and what thickness?
- How should I post-treat the welds to make them resistant to rust?

Hello.
If you are welding in galv, make sure to have good ventilation to avoid galv poisoning (relieved with milk and fil if you get it).
Otherwise, both welders work without problems.
Use 0.8 mm wire.
And use cold galv for protection.
Personally, if I may say, a feeding rack is not expensive, so I would rather buy one than go through the hassle.
They are also available on Blocket.

From someone who has welded in galv and felt terrible afterward several times.

MIG and galvanized don't work so well together, you need to grind off all the galvanization for it to go well.
However, if you're using stick welding (MMA), you don't need to grind as thoroughly or at all.
The fumes from the zinc aren't healthy, but arc welding works fine outdoors.
Treatment, well, if you're arc welding, you keep as much galvanization as possible, the rest you paint over, but it will rust.
