Wall materials - anyone who knows?
Hello,
I need help figuring out what material one of my walls is made of as I'm going to hang a large and heavy painting.
The wall sounds hollow when I knock on it. When I hammer, there's a slight resistance for about 1.7 cm and then the material becomes porous, and the nail turns white at the tip. The nail doesn't grip any of the materials but comes out again if I pull on it.
The house was built in 1942 (a larger apartment building), and the other walls are either made of concrete or lightweight concrete with a type of chicken wire and reed underneath.
Does anyone have an idea of what material this might be and what type of anchors/screws I should use to mount my painting???

I agree, just drill and use a plug made for aerated concrete, I personally like Fischer but there are other brands that work as well. Drill without hammer action, there are SDS-drill bits that are 5.5 mm which usually work well in aerated concrete for plugs that require a 6 mm drill.Stefan N said:
If you don't have a lot of drills and machines at home, you can first try to nail in a galvanized 3 inch/75 mm nail at a slight downward angle. It usually provides enough hanging strength to hang a (heavy) painting.

I have plugs at home marked 8 mm that are for lightweight concrete. Will they work just as well, and what size drill bit should I use in that case? I have a drill and drill bits at home. The package with drill bits says that some are for metal, others seem to be for brick and wood. Do I need to buy new drill bits or can I use any of them? How should one otherwise think when it comes to the size of the screw in relation to the plug?

Take the drills that are for brick, start drilling with a drill that is one size smaller than 8 mm. Try if you can tap the plug in lightly, otherwise, you need to drill with the 8 mm drill.

If you can't get the plug in, you can try making the hole a bit larger with the smaller drill, angle the drill a little so the bit widens the hole. My experience is that if you drill as large a hole as it says on the plug packaging, the plug spins when you screw in. You can also wrap the plug in a bit of kitchen paper if the hole is too large, and that might suffice.
