Hello everyone,

I have a question about our 1960s house.

We have an old ventilation duct that I need to tear down and block because a new ventilation system will be installed in the kitchen.

The problem is that the old system is too low, and I want to lower the ceiling. I'm unsure if it is fiberglass or asbestos.

We previously sent in an analysis of the kitchen tiles, which were not asbestos, but I wanted to ask first before I send it in.

Thanks in advance!

  • A grey ventilation duct with metal clamp connected to a white square box on a wooden ceiling, possibly containing old insulation materials.
  • Close-up of an old ventilation duct sample on a wooden surface, possibly containing asbestos, related to a question about a 60s house renovation.
It looks like a typical case of asbestos. If you are going to remove the duct, try to remove it whole. Then you will not be exposed to asbestos dust.

Yes, the channel is made of eternit which contains asbestos.

Thank you for your answers!!
I had suspected that it was

Uncommon with such clear-cut cases, here there will be no discussions about whether someone is paranoid!

If possible, you can dampen it and the area before starting to take it down, which reduces the risk of dust, and the dust that does arise sticks to the moisture and becomes easy to wipe off with a cloth that you can dispose of along with the rest.

One can also paint on the structure and fracture surfaces to bind the dust during demolition.
