Using a putty knife instead of a grout float?

Make it simple, buy what you need, you will sweat anyway if it's your first time. For example, such a kit is a good idea. Complement with a rubber/window squeegee for the initial cleaning of the tiles.

And yes, you "must" have something with a soft edge, otherwise it will just be complicated and you'll have to work with the sponge unnecessarily much (risking discoloration as a result).
