To clarify, as there seems to be some confusion for TS. It's not the "thick post" that is the issue but the landing on the half-floor. It needs to be supported at the corner that isn't connected to a wall.
That's it, along with the fact that a beam structure isn't supported by a trellis, as Justus means.

It's probably the terms that are confusing. The landing is what you pause on between stair flights, the area between floors.
Nothing will be affected other than aesthetically if you cut according to your red line.
