It is time for me to make my debut in this forum that I have only read so far...

I have a single-story house with a basement that is 5m wide. Internally it is about 4.70. The roof slope is 20 degrees. Is it possible and something to even consider to modify the trusses to have a steeper slope and furnish an upper floor with a room at each end of the house, or will it just look ridiculously pointy?

It won't be about "redoing" the roof trusses without removing them and installing new ones.
I would say it's possible, but if you're aiming for sensible rooms in such a narrow house, you probably shouldn't go for a regular pitched roof. Instead, consider a pitched roof with a raised wall plate (http://www.sepa.fi/SV/offertbegaran/5.-ramverkstakstol.html) or a mansard roof (http://www.sepa.fi/SV/offertbegaran/9.-mansardtakstol.html) so that the slanted ceiling doesn't steal too much space.
Also, keep in mind there will be a staircase that occupies space both upstairs and downstairs.

Our house is 5.5 meters wide and has two decent bedrooms in the attic. With half a meter less, they would still be usable. But that's because it's a mansard roof. (Then it's extended at an angle with two additional bedrooms, but that's not relevant here.)

Thank you, Farzan, for your response!

We are considering what we should do. Vinkel has also been an option, or furnishing our garage of 40 m2, which is already insulated and located "wall to wall" with the house. However, it is half a flight down, and currently, there is no doorway between the house and the garage.

I've heard that building upwards is cheaper than building new outward, and the mansard roof you suggest seems like a very good idea. The stairs down to the basement are against an exterior wall roughly in the middle of the house, so two rooms, one in each direction, could probably fit without a problem; the house is just over 12 meters long.

One more question: What angles do you have on your roof?

Something that I personally find attractive is raised walls with horizontal windows that let in light. Common on older timbered houses and also today on newly produced ones. Ex: http://www.varsasvillan.se/detaljer.asp?prod_id=45

Combine it with a stylish wooden floor that the light can shine over.
